1) What is the difference between a carat of gold and carat of precious stones? None, it is only a coincidence of terms. Regarding the gold, carat is the amount of gold which is included in the metal alloy. Pure – clean - gold is marked as 24 carat gold. 18 carat gold is used for making jewelry which contains 75% of gold in the metal alloy and also 14 carat gold with 58,5 % of gold in the metal alloy. 8 carat (indicated as 333) gold is used abroad for making very cheap jewelry and contains only 1/3 of gold in the alloy.
A carat of precious stones describes the weight of the stone. The name carat first appeared in the Arabian markets where the seeds of the bread tree were used for weighing precious stones. 1 carat = 0, 2 gram. A 5 carat diamond weighs 1 gram.
2) Is there a difference between a diamond and a brilliant? Diamond is a natural crystal substance which is processed. Other precious stones of this type of composition are called diamond. A brilliant is a type of diamond cut which has specific parameters. It consists of small grinded surfaces: 57 facets which are made to reflect as much light as possible. Perfectly cut and grinded diamonds reflect up to 99% of light that enters it. For this reason such stones are “most alive” and most valuable on the market.
3) Why does gold have different colors? The color of gold is influenced by the presence of the foreign materials in the metal alloy.
4) Is a one carat diamond twice as big as a half carat diamond? A carat stone of brilliant cut has a diameter of 6. 5 mm and height of 3. 9 mm. A half carat stone has a diameter of 5.2 mm and height 3.1 mm. It is obvious that a one carat stone is only a little bit bigger than a half carat stone. It is easy to remember that a diamond weighing 0.1 ct has a diameter of 3 mm and one carat a diamond of 6.5 mm. One will always correctly identify these dimensions and never look like an absolute laic after a brief assessment.
5) Is it possible to measure the parameters of a diamond set in jewelry? An expert is able to determine the individual parameters of such a stone quite easily. The weight can be calculated very accurately by means of its dimensions (if they can be measured in the jewelry). It is also not difficult to grade the purity even though there gold may have be used to partial cover any impurities in a diamond. Color is most difficult to determine with experts who give little range for assessment. However, all diamonds sold by proper companies are accompanied by a certificate which precisely assesses the used stone before mounting. An experienced goldsmith knows how to bring out the best of a used stone and vice versa, hide slight shortcomings. Thus, the stone creates a unity with the mounted jewelry and can be evaluated appropriately.
